Frequently Asked Questions
What size rooms are best suited for large downlights?
Large downlights work best in spacious areas like open-plan living rooms, commercial spaces, warehouses, and rooms with high ceilings over 3 metres. They're particularly effective in areas where you need bright, even lighting coverage without installing numerous smaller fixtures. For standard-sized residential rooms, regular downlights are usually more appropriate.
How many large downlights do I need for my room?
The number depends on your room size and the downlight's wattage, but large downlights significantly reduce the quantity needed compared to standard sizes. For example, a 24w 300mm downlight can cover much more area than several smaller 6w units. As a general rule, space large downlights 1.5 to 2 metres apart for even coverage.
Can I install large downlights in a standard ceiling?
Yes, but you'll need adequate ceiling void space to accommodate the larger housing and heat dissipation requirements. Most large downlights require at least 100-150mm of space above the ceiling. It's essential to check your ceiling construction and consult an electrician, especially for heavier fixtures that may need additional support.
What's the difference between 150mm and 200mm downlights?
The main differences are light output and coverage area. 150mm downlights are ideal for residential spaces and provide moderate illumination, whilst 200mm models offer significantly more brightness and wider coverage, making them better suited for commercial applications or larger rooms. The larger size also means fewer fixtures needed overall.
Do large downlights use more electricity than smaller ones?
Not necessarily. LED large downlights are highly efficient and often use similar or even less energy than multiple smaller fixtures needed to achieve the same light output. For instance, one 24w large downlight might replace three or four smaller 8w units, actually reducing your total energy consumption whilst providing better coverage.
Are large downlights suitable for dimming?
Many large LED downlights are dimmable, but you'll need to check the specific product specifications and use compatible LED dimmer switches. Simple Lighting's large downlights often include dimming capabilities, allowing you to adjust brightness levels for different occasions whilst maintaining the clean, modern aesthetic these fixtures provide.
What colour temperature should I choose for large downlights?
Warm white (2700K-3000K) creates a cosy atmosphere perfect for living spaces and restaurants, whilst cool white (6000K+) provides crisp, bright lighting ideal for offices and commercial areas. Natural white (4000K) offers a balanced option that works well in kitchens, retail spaces, and areas where you need good colour rendering without being too stark.
