LED Batten Lights

LED batten lights are a straightforward way to get bright, even light across large spaces without racking up your energy bills. They're a go-to choice for offices, warehouses, schools and workshops, and they'll outlast fluorescent tubes by a long stretch.

Our range covers slimline LED battens in 2ft, 4ft, 5ft and 6ft lengths, with wattage options for everything from a small utility room to a full-sized factory floor. Most are available in cool white or natural white, and plenty come with IP ratings for damp or dusty environments. Every batten we sell is designed to drop straight in where an old fluorescent fitting used to be, so upgrading doesn't need to be a big project.

LED Batten Lights by Size

Getting the right size LED batten comes down to your space and how much light you actually need. Here's a rough guide to help you narrow it down.

2ft LED Batten Lights

A 2ft batten works well in smaller spots where a full-sized fitting would look out of place. Utility rooms, cupboards, small bathrooms, above a workbench. At around 20W they still kick out a decent amount of light and they're easy to fit in tight spaces where anything bigger just won't work.

4ft LED Batten Lights

This is probably the most popular size we sell. A 4ft LED batten suits offices, kitchens, corridors and retail units. At around 36 to 40W, one fitting can comfortably light a standard room on its own. It's also the most common size people go for when they're swapping out old 4ft fluorescent tubes, which makes it a favourite for office refits.

Pair them with LED panel lights for a complete office lighting upgrade.

5ft LED Batten Lights

The 5ft batten is your standard commercial workhorse. Schools, shops, workshops and warehouse spaces tend to use this size. It gives you a good balance between coverage and output, and it's a straight swap for traditional 5ft fluorescent fittings. If you want fewer fittings on the ceiling but still need strong light levels, this is the one.

6ft LED Batten Lights

When you're lighting big open spaces like warehouses, factories or distribution centres, 6ft LED battens are what you need. These are built to run all day in tough environments. High ceilings and large floor areas need serious output, and the 6ft batten delivers that with fewer fittings than you'd need with shorter alternatives.

Replace Fluorescent Tubes with LED Battens

If you're still running old fluorescent tubes, swapping them out for LED battens is one of the easiest upgrades you can make. LED battens use up to 60% less energy, they don't flicker or hum like tired fluorescent fittings, and they produce less heat too.

The changeover is simple. Our LED battens are built as like-for-like replacements for standard fluorescent fittings. A 4ft LED batten replaces a 4ft fluorescent, a 5ft replaces a 5ft, and so on. You don't need to mess around with ceiling fixings or rewiring. Most fittings can be swapped in minutes.

If you're replacing fluorescent tubes in a suspended ceiling grid, our LED tube lights are a direct swap for the tubes themselves.

There's a practical side beyond the energy savings as well. Fluorescent tubes contain small amounts of mercury, so they need specialist disposal when they fail. LED battens don't have that problem. They also last far longer, typically 30,000 to 50,000 hours compared to about 10,000 for a fluorescent tube. That's fewer replacements, less hassle with maintenance, and lower costs over time.

If you're running a large commercial space with dozens of old fluorescent fittings, the savings stack up fast. Plenty of our trade customers see a return on the investment within the first year.

LED Battens for Garages and Workshops

Garages and workshops need lighting that's tough, reliable and bright enough to work under. LED battens tick all three boxes, which is why they're such a common choice for these spaces.

For a single garage, one or two 4ft or 5ft battens will usually be plenty. Bigger workshops or double garages tend to need a row of 5ft or 6ft fittings to get even coverage across the whole workspace. If your garage is unheated or gets a lot of condensation, it's worth going for an IP rated batten. IP65 means the fitting is fully sealed against dust and can handle water jets, so even the dampest workshop won't cause problems.

Most of our battens can be surface mounted on walls or ceilings using the same bracket, which is handy if your ceiling height is limited and you'd rather mount them on the wall instead.

Need more output for larger industrial spaces? Our high bay LED lights are designed for ceilings above 4 metres.

Emergency LED Batten Lights

If you're fitting out a commercial space, emergency lighting isn't something you can skip. It's a legal requirement under UK building regulations. Our LED battens with built-in emergency battery backup will keep your space lit for up to three hours during a power cut, giving everyone safe passage to the exits.

The emergency function is built into the fitting itself, so you don't need separate emergency light units on the walls. When the power drops out, the batten switches to emergency mode automatically. When power comes back, the battery recharges on its own. It keeps the ceiling tidy and means fewer fittings to install and look after overall.

If you're setting up a new commercial unit or upgrading an existing one, going for battens with emergency backup lets you tick two boxes with one fitting.

We also carry standalone emergency lights if you need dedicated units for corridors and stairwells.

IP Rated LED Batten Lights

Not every batten is made for the same conditions. If your space gets damp, dusty or sees big temperature swings, you need a fitting with the right IP rating.

IP20 is fine for dry indoor spaces like offices and classrooms. If there's some moisture or humidity involved, things like kitchens, bathrooms or covered car parks, you'll want IP44 or higher. For the harshest environments like food processing areas, outdoor canopies or anywhere that gets hosed down, IP65 is what you're after. That means the fitting is completely sealed against dust and protected from water jets from any direction.

If you're updating a bathroom at the same time, take a look at our LED bathroom mirrors and fire rated downlights too.

Every batten in our range shows its IP rating in the product specs, so you can quickly see what's suitable for your space.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are LED batten lights and where are they commonly used?

LED batten lights are long, straight light fittings that provide bright, even illumination across large spaces. They're commonly used in offices, warehouses, schools, workshops, and retail units where you need reliable, energy-efficient lighting. These fittings are designed to replace traditional fluorescent tube lights and offer much better energy efficiency and lifespan.

How much energy do LED battens save compared to fluorescent tubes?

LED batten lights use up to 60% less energy than traditional fluorescent tubes whilst producing the same amount of light. This significant energy saving means lower electricity bills and reduced environmental impact. LED battens also produce less heat and don't suffer from the flickering or humming issues that old fluorescent fittings develop over time.

Can I replace my existing fluorescent fittings with LED battens?

Yes, every LED batten we sell at Simple Lighting is designed to drop straight in where an old fluorescent fitting used to be. This makes upgrading from fluorescent tubes a straightforward project that doesn't require major electrical work. The LED battens are available in standard sizes like 2ft, 4ft, 5ft, and 6ft to match existing fluorescent installations.

What IP ratings are available for LED batten lights?

Many of our LED battens come with IP ratings suitable for damp or dusty environments, making them ideal for workshops, warehouses, and industrial settings. The IP rating tells you how well the fitting is protected against dust and moisture. Higher IP ratings mean better protection for challenging environments where standard indoor lights wouldn't be suitable.

What's the difference between cool white and natural white LED battens?

Cool white LED battens (around 6000-6500K) produce a crisp, bright light that's ideal for task-focused areas like workshops and offices. Natural white (around 4000K) gives a more balanced light that's comfortable for general use and closer to daylight. Most of our LED battens are available in both options, so you can choose the colour temperature that suits your space best.

Which size LED batten do I need for my space?

The right size depends on your room dimensions and lighting needs. 2ft battens (20W) work well for small spaces like utility rooms, 4ft battens (36-40W) are perfect for standard offices and kitchens, 5ft battens suit larger commercial spaces, and 6ft battens are designed for warehouses and high-ceiling areas. A 4ft batten can comfortably light a standard room on its own.

How long do LED batten lights typically last?

LED batten lights have a much longer lifespan than fluorescent tubes, typically lasting 25,000 to 50,000 hours depending on usage. This means they can run for years without needing replacement, reducing maintenance costs and hassle. The long lifespan, combined with the energy savings, makes LED battens a cost-effective lighting solution for commercial and industrial applications.
